What Should Your Skin Care Routine Look Like?

To keep your skin fresh, healthy, and as youthful as possible it’s important to follow an effective skin care routine. Specific products will vary depending on your skin type (oily, dry, combination), but the following products are all important to maintain your healthy glow.

Step 1 – Cleanser

Start off with a cleanser (at night and in the morning) to remove skin’s impurities and dirt. However, it is important to find a cleanser that doesn’t dry your skin out and remove essential oils.

Step 2 – Toner

Toner should be applied immediately after the cleanser to restore the skin’s pH levels and help prep the skin for serum and moisturizer. Toner helps improve skin’s texture and hydration.

Step 3 - Serum

Serums are great products that help protect skin against signs of aging. Serums are generally full of nutrients, vitamins, and antioxidants that will help keep your skin vibrant and healthy. A good serum will rejuvenate skin cells and boost collegen production.

Step 4 – Moisturizer

It might sound surprising, but even if you have oily skin, you shouldn’t avoid moisturizer. Moisturizer is a crucial step in the skin care routine. A good moisturizer will help hydrate your skin, not make it greasy. As an added bonus, it’s helpful to use a daytime moisturizer with SPF.

Step 5 (Optionals) – Eye Creams, Exfoliators, Masks

In addition to the steps above, you may want to consider using an eye cream, exfoliator, and masks. For eye creams, avoid anything to heavy – it can create puffiness. You’ll want to look for a light-weight cream or gel. Exfoliating is a great step to reveal younger, smoother skin. It’s recommended to use an exfoliator or scrub about once a week. Using a mask weekly can also rejuvenate skin, regenerate oil, and hydrate.

Best Organic Cleansers

We’ve featured our favorite organic eye creams and favorite moisturizers, now it’s time to focus on the all-important cleanser. A good cleanser is key for cleaning and purifying your skin. The ingredients in organic cleansers also tend to be less harsh, making it a great solution for sensitive skin.

Below are some of our best selling organic cleansers:

Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Milk - Ideal for removing makeup, this gentle cleanser features fermented grain extract to remove dirt and impurities. Jojoba and sweet almond oils maintain the natural moisture balance, keeping dry, mature and sensitive skin soft and supple.

Suki Creamy Foaming Cleanser - Preserves skin’s natural moisture balance, fights free radicals, restores radiance, minimizes pore size, removes dirt, dullness & impurities.

Sophyto Natural Glycolic Foaming Cleanser - A sublime airy mousse made from concentrated orchard apple extract and raw sugar cane to offer a totally natural solution compared to harsh glycolic acids. The fruit acid foam works upon contact with skin to gently, yet effectively remove cellular build-up revealing a much fresher, glowing complexion. Because this cleanser does not contain overly rich foaming boosters and sulphates, it requires little to no agitation when rinsing, so suitable for even the most sensitive of skin, including rosacea and acne.

100% Pure Skin Brightening Facial Cleanser - 100% Pure formula gets its brightening effect from all natural, gentle ingredients like bearberry, kojic acid, sake, fruit acids, licorice, vitamin c, lemon juice and strawberries. This skin brightening facial cleanser washes away makeup (including eye makeup) and other impurities while aloe juice and rose hydrosol hydrates and soothes.

Boscia Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil – An extremely gentle and effective cleansing oil for all skin types that removes makeup and impurities while decongesting pores without leaving an oily residue.

This Coolibar sun hat is not only stylish and perfect with any outdoor outfit, it’s packable! Are you dreaming about the Hamptons? Florida? Or maybe just Folly Beach? This is the hat you need… and it’s also 25% off when you enter code SUN at checkout. So go for it!

Mystery Ingredient Monday: Benzophenone

This week we’re going to be focusing on SUNSCREEN. Spring is coming up and it’s time to prepare by buying sunscreens. Sunscreen protects you from damage caused by UV rays, which can lead to all kinds of skin cancers. And on a shallow level, sunscreen will also protect you from premature aging. Sun exposure can leave your skin dried out with sun spots, fine lines and wrinkles. If you use the right sunscreen, you can shave years off your appearance.

So what’s in non-organic sunscreens? Plenty of nasty things. Today we’ll be focusing on Benzophenone.

Benzophenone

Benzophenone is an organic compound that is usually found (or its alike substitute oxybenzone) in chemical sunscreens. It is used in plastics to protect the contents inside the bottle from UV rays. That’s right–it’s used in plastic and you’re there slathering it on as well. Yuck! Well, the news gets worse. According to several sources, benzophenone has been linked to an increase in malignant melanoma… the very thing it is used to prevent!

So, you may be wondering, “Where’s the good news?” The good news is that although tests are still being performed on chemical sunscreens, the FDA still says that they protect you against melanoma. We, of course, argue that you should protect yourself and your family naturally. With organic sunscreens from COOLA, Boscia, Juice Beauty and John Masters, you can frolic in the sunshine without worrying about your complexion.
