Mystery Ingredient Monday: Cadmium

Today’s Mystery Ingredient Monday is cadmium. Haven’t heard of it? Unless you’re really up on green news (or a scientist), you probably wouldn’t. But it’s important that you know about it because experts are calling it the “new lead.” Cadmium can be found in plastics, coatings, batteries–and most recently–in face powders and lipsticks! Because of it’s yellow/orange pigment, it’s perfect for cosmetics.

The verdict: Even in small amounts, cadmium is said to cause hypertension (high blood pressure). Canada has banned its use in the production of all cosmetics. Though its link to cancer has “limited evidence,” kidney and renal failure evidence is strong. So, in other words, you definitely want to stay away from products that use cadmium even in very limited quantities.
